If you happen to be from an older generation, you likely recall when green living was commonly practiced. Before the arrival of fast food restaurants and processed foods, normal food for nearly all people was organic. Many years ago, just about everyone maintained at least a small garden, and most small communities also had small farmers markets. There wasn't the need to read food labels to see what the product contained. Gardening used to be a usual practice in everyone's lives; this is how parents would feed their kids and keep the extra foods for wintertime. "Waste not, want not" was a favorite saying so what was not eaten was put back into the garden.

All natural fertilizers were used as nutrients for the gardens and people didn't utilize or need chemical substances. A lot of gardens would grow sufficient amounts food not merely for the family growing them but also enough to divvy up with the people next door. This was the time when people shared with their neighbors and really were familiar with each other. Today we have words such as pesticides, herbicides and man-made chemical fertilizers which were undiscovered back then. Even though these pesticides and chemicals were thought to assist in growing food, what they truly did was begin harming the environment.

We will in all likelihood never realize how many of the health problems of today are set off by the chemicals found in the ground and the lack of nutrients in the foods we consume. Each time pesticides are applied, you are told to stay away from the area for a certain amount of time. If these pesticides are so dangerous that you can't inhale them, how can it be great to eat the food that has absorbed these chemicals? If you are growing your food without the use of chemical based pesticides, you need not worry about being in the garden with toxic chemicals. Don't forget, if your garden is close by your house, the synthetic fertilizers and pesticides can seep into your well water or even in to the air in your home. By maintaining your own organic garden, you can be certain you're consuming nutritious foods and saving the environment at the same time.
