The Finer Points Of Geotechnical Drilling

By Patricia White

If there was one animal that can lay claim to being the undisputed ruler of literally everything above the water and below the sky, it is humanity. The thing about humans is that environments that most of them live are anything but natural. High rise buildings with climate control are unnatural. No, most other animals need to just deal with whatever nature throws at them. But not humankind. No, human beings decided that being hit with all the crap nature had up its sleeve was far too inconvenient. Then it started erecting buildings. But before that, the land has to be examined first, generally through geotechnical drilling Nova Scotia.

Geotechnical drilling is a form of drilling that is done before any kind of construction project begins. It is when qualified engineers go out on to a site and then inspect it. The engineers who conduct the inspection may also be able to offer other types of services.

Now, the reason it is done is simple. Before a project begins, the land it is supposed to stand on needs to be able to support the resulting structure. Which means it has to be inspected thoroughly beforehand.

Now, there is going to be quite a bit of equipment involved. First and foremost, a truck is going to be needed, to transport all that equipment. Then there is the probe itself, the main tool to be used. The probe is kind of like a guillotine, except instead of slicing heads off of monarchs, it just bores straight into the ground to record data.

The thing is, that a company that offers the service is generally going to need to charge their clients a fee for that service. First, the equipment that they use is going to be quite expensive, as industrial equipment usually is. Then there are the engineers, who will expect their paychecks to not bounce. Of course, there are also just general operating costs, like utility bills and possibly renting office space.

If there is risk, then something is not being done right. When the probe is properly maintained and responsibly used, then it should function as intended. As such, if someone dies or is hurt, then there was a misstep somewhere in the planning process.

The way it is done is fairly simple. First, they drive to the site. Then they take the probe off of the truck. Then they set the thing up. Then the probe launches the drill downwards into the earth and records all the relevant data.

This is done because people want to be safe. Also because a construction company does not want the black mark of a collapse on their record. That can kill business faster than executive shake up.

Humans have certain expectations. One is comfort. But the other is safety, and there are steps to insure that.
