Are You A Friend Or Foe Of The Planet?

By Dean Prater

In the current web based world, everyone knows the names of the giants in the world of technology. Several people own Apple iPhones and the majority of us definitely use Google to search for things we want to find online. For all of the great impact these companies make by helping to make our everyday life richer as well as simpler, what are they doing with regards to staying 'green' so we can all have a brighter future? We shall take a look at how they rate now.

Many people already know about how Apple has caught some flack in the last several years for the conditions of workers in overseas factories that critics claim are working in appalling conditions. In other countries that do little to insist on standards of living for their work forces, it might be difficult to see the images. While an iPhone is definitely something of a status symbol in the U.S., if Apple isn't careful they will end up looking more rotten than alluring. Consider, for example, a recent blog post in the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/faster-forward/post/greenpeace-gives-apple-low-marks-on-green-tech/2011/04/21/AFWWPwOE_blog.html), Greenpeace slammed Apple over something we might not have expected: the amount of energy its North Carolina based data center consumes. This might feel like small potatoes, although to Greenpeace this sort of careless energy use is not a positive thing. Facebook, Amazon and Twitter scored much higher, demonstrating that not all tech companies are doing things poorly.

Several businesses are now taking incredibly aggressive measures to encourage wiser energy use. Google has determined that wind power is great for the world and its own bottom line, too. A story in the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/04/18/google-wind-farm-investment-oregon_n_850707.html) revealed that Google is purchasing yet another wind farm and this time laying out $100 million to cultivate its ability to power 'the cloud' with wind, so to speak. By making this move, Google expands its dedication to a better world in the public eye.

Needless to say, there are many, many smaller tech firms and also people that just use their services, that would like to really make a difference. Using alternatives like an eco shopping bag and customized recycled bags, for example, we are able to do that. We are able to take that much litter away by never utilizing the plastic bags that cause so much harm as they accumulate. We can also, if we have our own company, use seed paper for our stationary and allow our letters sprout into new green life. We truly do have plenty of ways of engaging in growing a better future.

So while Google and Apple both have the opportunity to generate huge impacts - for better or for worse - every one of us play a role. It is our world so if we have a company or simply work for one, there is certainly always something we can all do.
