A Look At The Multiple Spill Containment Units Available For Purchase

By Shawna Fletcher

When working with liquids and hazardous materials having a proper spill containment unit is essential. Because there are so many different scenarios where one of these items will need to be used, manufacturers have created a wide range of models. Depending on the situation one model may work better than another so finding the right one will require knowledge of what it is going to be used for prior to purchase.

Some situations that call on the need for these items include oil changes in the field and the storing of drums. Other instances include maintaining an area where different fluids may be released from a vehicle such as anti freeze and transmission fluid. Each model is designed for a specific use from pallets to inflatable mats with sides that deflate and inflate when a vehicle drives over it.

One of the mobile and stationary models that is quite common and found in many different industrial areas is the Berm. This unit is designed to contain liquids and other hazardous materials within a confined area that generally comes in mat form. There are a few different designs including an inflatable design and a stationary design that has fully supported walls that do not move.

A pallet is another piece of equipment that is required when moving large drums and other material. In order to prevent messes from occurring the manufactures of this safety equipment have designed pallets which are designed to catch the liquids. Other items used with drums include platforms which are set upon the pallet and then the drums are set inside the platform to provide protection.

Decks are another design that can be used as a stationary work area for maintenance on many different vehicles. One common piece of machinery that makes use of this item is a forklift as the deck provides a safe place to do oil and other fluid changes. The decks come equipped with container modules built to house the liquid removed by the sump pump.

When more space is required the drums can be combined with each other using couplings. This will allow the unit to handle more fluids overall and require it to be emptied less often as well. Along with the drums, bladders are used to drain the contents of the drums in order for easier disposal.

Due to the fact that there are so many spill containment models available they cannot all be listed in one article. Inflatable units are the perfect design when working on large trucks and heavy equipment within a field setting because they can be set up and taken down easily. The stationary models available are mostly found in shop environments of companies that service vehicles on a daily basis.
