The Different Application Of Well Drilling Equipment

By Geneva Anthony

The well drilling equipment is a machine that is used to make holes or boreholes (or simply shafts) into the surface of the earth. These machines, also called rigs, may be massive structures used to drill natural gas extraction wells, water wells or oil wells or they could be merely small machines that can be moved manually by a single person.

These structures may be used to sample mineral deposits, test soil, rocks and the properties of ground water. They may also be used to install underground fabrications like instrumentations, tunnels and wells. Other rigs are mobile machines mounted on the back of tracks and trailers.

Some structures are designed to be fixed onto tracks making them mobile while others are installed on the site. Others are also portable with the difference being that they have to be scattered before they are carried to other sites. Large structures are capable of making very deep holes into the crust on the earth.

Rigs meant for the extraction of oil and gas may also be used to locate geological reservoirs. In the ancient exploration of oil, the machines used were partially permanent as they were never uninstalled after the exploration was completed. This, on the other hand, is not true for the current expensive structures which are removed.

The situation is, however, different from the modern exploration where all the machinery is removed after the whole process. The light duty structures, in the shape of mobile cranes, are mostly used to dig water wells. The heavy duty ones are mostly used during the extraction of natural gas or oil and are very involving during relocation.

There are various factors used to categorize the well drilling equipment. They may be categorized by the ways in which their drill cuts are removed from the cutting edges. Subsequently, they can also be categorized by examining their sources of energy; ether mechanical, hydraulic or electrical.
