How IBC Spill Pallets Can Save The Day

By Dorothea Evans

A plant manager gets to the office first thing Friday morning with anticipation for an easy day and a long weekend. He finds that a drum of chemicals began leaking over night. Close to one hundred gallons of the chemical ran down the driveway and into the city sewer. Friday would have started much better with IBC spill pallets.

The local emergency response unit came out to survey the scene, even though the chemicals were not unsafe. Policemen were dispatched, which meant everyone with a CB or scanner knew about the leak of chemicals in their town of high standards. A reporter from the local newspaper is there trying to get information for a front page article. The television station sent its lead I team investigator. She interviewed a former employee that said this event was like the chickens coming home to roost.

Environmental protection services finally arrives. Three additional hours were spent completing an investigation and filling out tons of paperwork. After most of the day lost, paying employees who were unable to work, listening to customers upset because their orders were late, there was a pending fine of ten thousand dollars waiting somewhere in the future. The foreman finally drags himself into the office where his brown bagged lunch is still untouched on his desk.

He phones his wife letting her know that he will miss his sons baseball game because of having to play catch up for the time lost. As he ends the call he notices a brochure on his desk describing the positives of spill pallets. This foreman had decided several weeks earlier to purchase a few, but procrastinated one day too long.

A spill pallet is like life insurance. It may not seem important until it is really needed. And if one does not have it when they really need it, it is too late. A wise business person knows that insurance provides assurance. This assurance includes reduction of midnight calls and working late due to chemicals leaks and lack of storage room. It greatly reduces the chances of environmental issues from spills.

IBC means intermediate bulk container. This is a safe type of pallet which is effective in containing spills. They provide extensive flexibility. Chemical totes fifty inches square and less, as well as drums, can be put in them.

Both the metal and polyethylene pallets have a spill overflow capacity of four hundred pounds. This will provide substantial time between inventory checks which could catch the leaks. This is also a great tool for placing up under a chemical container that is already leaking. The basin deepness allows for a sump to be used. This step could be a faster drain method than unplugging a drain. Drain plugs are readily available for the polyethylene types.

No matter if the unit is a single or double type a platform can be inserted in it. This allows for chemicals to be used in a remote location. An off site job location would be more secure and much safer if these were used to hold and dispense chemicals. IBC spill pallets could create extra security in several ways. This is a smart investment to make.
