Issues On Mold Indoor Air Quality

By Frances Howard

Molds are already part of the environment. They can be found everywhere, it maybe indoors or outdoors. These can often be found in wet areas like sinks, bathroom curtains, and floors. So, to control the growth of molds, you should be able to control moisture.

Exposure to these can cause irritations to your eyes, skin, lungs, nose, and throat. Mold indoor air quality issues are usually the possible cause for most health problems. These are determined through a slimmy, black green in color substance that can be found mostly in the walls and roofs. As investigated, these are uncommon species of mold that produces toxigenic spores.

The only solution to some environmental problems is fresh air, but with molds, it has to be removed. Even dead, still it releases some spores in the air. There are molds that can be harmless, but most of it are toxic. Tests are already been conducted for the assessment of some potential risks due to exposure, but still have few documentation and regulations.

Many have said that most people nowadays are more sensitive as compared before, like years ago. This is because the materials used in most buildings today are highly exposed to molds due to the low nitrogen and high cellulose it contains. These two contents are targets of spores when there is moisture. Materials that easily gets wet must be dried quickly because it is considered to have a higher humidity.

For people who are sensitive to this, inhaling and touching it may cause allergic reactions like sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes. And people with serious allergies may have severe reactions like shortness of breath. Spores can also cause asthma attacks to people with asthma. Infants, children, older people, people with diseases like infections, cancers, and lung diseases are more sensitive to this.

It could be impossible to get rid of these spores indoors. If moisture is not there, spores will not be able to grow. You must control the moisture indoors to prevent this. Water problems should be fixed and cleaned right away when you see mold growth in your home. If you cannot fix problems right away, it is possible for molds to keep coming back.

If leaks and spills happen, dry it immediately. If these are dried directly within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases, spores will not grow. Roof gutters are to be cleaned and repaired regularly. In air conditioned rooms, always make sure that the drip pans are clean and the drain lines are properly constructed are flowing properly.

Indoor humidity should be below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. If you see any condensation on windows, walls, or pipes, dry the wet surface immediately to reduce the moisture. Condensation can be a sign of high humidity.

Pesticides and biocides are used in killing living organisms. But one chemical that is not supposed to be used in cleaning is chlorine bleach. Avoid mixing the bleach to any biocides because this will produce toxic fumes. Always make sure that you ventilate the area properly when cleaning to exhaust the bad air outside.
