The filter size that is being used will also greatly matter, as the wavelength that must be absorbed should be equal to the wavelength that is transmitted.

Many analysts prefer to use an organic color reagent because they are very sensitive compared to an inorganic reagent. This is because they have proven to be very selective due to their stable property and can react quickly on a certain kind of solution. Thus, they can give a more varying color, which is beneficial for getting results.

The visual colorimeter is used to determine the difference of the lengths of the light path that are being compared and matched. The analysts also use proven equations in order to get the conclusions.

There are also enzymatic methods that are being used. This is where the color reaction is done by the reaction of an enzyme with the solution. Since the enzyme that is going to be used is particular for every substance, then there will be more accurate results. It is also carried out in an environment with a certain temperature for a more specified result.

Another known method for this is the use of ultraviolet rays. Though, in this kind of process, there is really no visible change in the color even if they are using the same principle. What is measured is the difference in the absorption of the color by the liquid substance, which greatly varies in the different known colors.

There are also automatic colorimeter that have been developed. In the past, that make use a cuvette that is the one containing the control substance. Then, the light intensity is being calculated before it can pass through the instrument. Years after the analysts make use of it, new kinds of colorimeters are also invented.
