Importance Of The Dissolved Oxygen Test Kit

By Megan Landry

The dissolved oxygen test kit is that equipment which is usually used by those marine aquarists. The kit is used so that they are able to detect and know the amount of O2 in their tanks. The equipment will also help them know the exact amount that has been dissolved in that tank. A lower level of O2 is known to be dangerous for the lives of the fish in your tank. This is not a very difficult process but you need to understand how to use it.

This is a device sold at the stores selling the aquarium equipment. You can walk around the shops so that you see the ones which are available. Also this can be the best time to know their prices and how to operate them. Make sure that when you are buying this kit, buy from a reliable dealer who can fix it for you if it is damaged or offers warranty. Choose the best quality but it should be within your budget.

The salt water plants will always ingest the carbon dioxide and instead expel the O2. This is only so during the day time. The whole process is reverse at night. This is the same case in the fish, corals, invertebrates, and bacteria.

There are a number off things that will be using the O2 apart from the critters in the tank. This includes all those dissolved organic materials that are known to settle down in that tank. As these dissolved materials break into small pieces they are known to consume a good amount of O2. Supposing you find or use nitrifying bacteria additives in your tank there is a way out. These additives are known to be multiplying very fast as well as consuming the largest portions of that O2 which was already in your tank.

If you are using additives like this one you will have to ensure that there is extra aeration. This extra aeration must be added to that tank. The salty water usually has the limited capacity that could hold O2. The exact amount of O2 which the salt water could contain usually depends on the temperature as well as the salinity level of that water.

There will be a flocculants precipitate formed at the bottom of the bottle. If you a brownish orange residue, that will mean that O2 is actually present in that water. The reagent remaining at the bottom might not affect the end results in any way.

If some amount oxygen is present in that sample, you will notice a color of brownish orange precipitate in color. Some small amount of that powdered reagent might remain at the bottom of the kit. This may not affect the end results in any way.

Dissolved oxygen test kit are not as expensive as you may think. To add on that using the kit is very easy. When you increase the load of your livestock in the tank, it is advisable to be testing your water periodically. The best time to add a live rock is when there is an increase or decrease of the biological filter capacity. This could be a better method of filtering and maintaining the oxygen.
