The Truth About Biomedical Waste Disposal

Within the state of Florida, there are around thirty eight thousand facilities that are capable of generating biomedical waste Florida. These facilities include clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, funeral homes, dentist clinics and many other related places. Biochemical waste Florida regulations are clear in its policies concerning the incineration and final disposal.

There are programs that are dedicated to the protection of workers within the health care industry, waste disposal and the general public as a whole. These biomedical wastes are extremely risky to those exposed due to the infectious diseases they potentially carry. Pathogens and diseases are very common within said wastes.

Examples of these materials include disposed needles, medical gloves, blood, laboratory samples and even body fluids taken from people and animals. Fecal matter, urine, bandages and waster water all contain minimal blood and are, interestingly, not considered examples. These wastes may be produced in medical clinics and laboratories but they can also be taken from certain businesses.

Funeral homes are an example of such businesses. As are tattoo parlors or even places such as residential homes. The danger of pathogens is a great risk that cannot be ignored meaning these wastes must be taken care of as soon as possible in the most careful manner.

There is a wide variety of materials that can fall under the category of biomedical waste. A lot of items that can be found and used in a hospital can be placed under the same category. Catheters, gloves and disposable gowns and masks, scalpels and other tools are very common examples. Organs, cells, body tissues and most importantly, blood, also fall under this category.

Most of these places have procedures for the disposal process. It is also a requirement for reputable businesses to follow set local regulations for the same purpose. Those that are produced in a residential home must also be taken care of responsibly.

Simple tasks such as keeping used medical instruments such as needles or syringes in a leak resistant container after usage can already help out in a major way. Changing bandages containing a lot of blood must be taken away in a very secure manner. Normal trash bags will not meet certain area regulations and specialized bags must be purchased through companies with specialties lying in medical supplies.

In certain places, wastes may be dropped off at certain facilities for proper disposal. In relation, there are also several companies that service clients by collecting the wastes from the businesses and homes themselves. Mailing services even exist where properly packaged needles can be sent to as long as the package itself is secure and passes the requirements of local area regulations.

Most biomedical waste Florida regulations require that it be treated and incinerated in order for it to become made non infectious. The wastes are burned by incinerators at temperatures set between 1,000 and 2,000 Fahrenheit or around 537.7 and 1093.3 celsius. Afterwards, the ashes are analyzed in order to make sure that it is not longer poses a threat. Once cleared, it will be taken to an area landfill. Some, such as blood, is poured into a sanitary drain that leads to the public sewer system.

  1. Since waste is already a worldwide problem, it is important that institutions directly concerned, such as medical establishments, find ways to manage their medical wastes properly. They should work together with medical waste disposal agencies, and find effective solutions that can deal with today's and tomorrow's medical waste problems.
