Why Using Spill Containment Pallets Prevents Contamination And Promotes Safety

By Lana Bray

The chemical spills that are in all of the newspapers whenever this happens makes many management team members look, constantly, into how to prevent them. Protecting the employees and the facility is uppermost in their mind. Systems that will help in this regard are looked at in an effort to provide that protection. Spill containment pallets are one of the best idea to come along.

The leaking of chemicals that will happen, all too often, is not necessarily the problem. The problem occurs when that chemical gets to the floor or other surfaces. This makes it a spill and all of the many rules and regulations must be implemented that causes shut downs and dislocations of manpower. Getting a system in place that will ameliorate this leakage before it becomes a problem is the main purpose behind these types of pallets.

All of the many operations in the area of a spill must be stopped. The equipment will need to be shut down and all personnel moved to other, safer, areas. All non contaminated materials that can be moved must be and barriers set up to prevent further incursions into the area. The hazardous material team will be called and they will come in the identified personal protective gear.

The neutralization and clean up will proceed along the path mandated by the EPA, OSHA and or FDA. All chemicals material will be neutralized with appropriate dry material and absorbed into the special material proscribed for that particular chemical. This will be placed in specially labeled containers for disposal or possible recycling. A certified company will have to perform this process.

The cleaning of this area will be completed and tested for residue contamination. Reporting of this spill will have already been done and those authorities will need to be notified of the results of the recovery. They may want to come in and certify that cleaning depending on a number of criteria. Your production is closed down for the entire time and it could become costly and definitely time consuming.

When a containment pallet system is installed, the entire operation can be dealt with in a easier, safer way. If or when someone notices a leak, they alert the supervisory staff. The leak will be flowing through the grates, installed in the top of these pallets, into the reservoir in the bottom. This keeps the chemical from escaping and the entire pallet can be moved into a cleaning area.

The very strong construction of polyethylene material which is non reactive to most chemicals will fully contain the chemicals in all drums placed on them. They come in sizes from one to eight barrels or drums. This makes it easy to open the production line immediately after they have been removed so down time is kept to an absolute minimum. The clean up is handled in an area that is not associated with the production area, so re contamination is not an issue, either.

Keeping and using chemicals require a lot of thought about the protection of the personnel who work with them. These spill containment pallets will provide the safety and security the entire management team is looking for. The hit to your reputation for having a spill is not worth the hassles that can come your way. Making these pallets part of your system will safeguard against this.
