Impact Of Green Schools To The Environment And Students

By Cathy Mercer

With the rapid changes in the environment and quick changes in the climate, the unpredictable effects of global warming can be felt throughout the globe. This opened the eyes of the people to be more aware of the condition of the environment. This sparked the movement of green schools Westchester which promotes energy conservation and student performance.

These are not just a building wherein student are taught different information and are prepared to be the citizens and leaders of the next generation. They are made to be free of harmful materials and toxic chemical, but instead they operate on sunlight and clean air. They constructed to reduce the production of waste, conserve energy, conserve resources, and lessen utility cost.

One of the main characteristics of these schools are low water consumption by using dual flush toilet and sinks with low water flow which reduces consumption by fifty percent. They can also use rain water for the toilets and for watering the plants rather than drinkable water which can also be costly. When children experience this firsthand, they will likely follow this action.

They also use the low emitting materials that do not emit toxic gases and will help improve the air quality in the surrounding environment and throughout the school. Having a good air quality indoors can reduce the absences related to respiratory problems. There are many materials manufactured to release no toxic gas like some paint and carpet adhesives, ceiling tiles, wall systems, and even furniture made with non toxic materials.

Setting up skylights and large windows can help in reducing costs of electricity since a lot of sunlight will be able to stream in and it can improve the concentration and performance of students. Installing shades and blinds can help in reducing the blaze of the sun. For those corners that cannot be reached by natural light, lightshelves can be used to bounce the sunlight and even the light distribution in the room.

However, there are still many instances when lighting will be needed so use the right fixture that uses adequate light when installing as to improve the learning ability of the students. There are fixtures that have adjustable brightness and these are fairly great when saving costs. Another villain to health are molds which can be prevented by having low humidity and proper ventilation.

They can cause serious health concerns because they have bacteria and germs and can affect children since they have weak immune systems. Recycling programs found at school which are used directly by students can teach them responsible environmental habits. This can greatly reduce the impact on carbon footprints due to waste products.

Green roofing are great for catching storm water and filtering them which can also provide a cooler temperature inside the building. Bird and butterflies sees the green roof as a natural habitat. Having joint use of facilities can reduce the cost of constructing additional facilities.

Having big windows can also help in the ventilation of the buildings and having a comfortable temperature indoors. Installing acoustics ceiling tiles can help teachers be heard out without having to shout and it keeps students alert. These are some examples of green schools Westchester that is beneficial to both the student and the environment.
