Make your Business Green

By Vivian Walsh

Your business may be located in retail offices, or you may work from home, but neither prevent you from going 'green.' By being aware of your resources, and the amount of waste your business creates, you can save money. It's easier than you think, plus it's good for our environment.

To help make your business more environmentally aware, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Greening Operations has released a guide containing simple ideas you can undertake now, to create a greener business. Some examples are listed below.

To reduce energy consumption by 25%, switch off your electrical equipment after you have finished using it. It's a substantial saving so why not make it a rule to turn off all machines at the end of the day? Computers use a lot of energy, and turning them off can save 50% of their energy usage.

Think about saving paper. If you don't need a printed copy of an email, then don't print it! Read on-screen instead, and do business electronically whenever you can. If possible, only use a cover sheet with your fax transmissions when vital, and always choose to send your fax documents directly from your computer. If you don't print hard copies you should see the paper wastage shrink. Double-sided documents cut down on paper use by half!

A dripping tap will drip away your profits. One drop every second can accumulate to 10,000 litres lost every year, and that's a loss you will be paying for. To reduce water consumption in toilets, a dam can be created from plastic containers filled with stones - but don't use bricks. When placed in the cistern these dams can reduce water consumption by four litres per flush.

Environmental policies can form part of a supplier's ethos, so take a look and find out what they offer in terms of going green. Try to select a company that will take back its own packaging.

It's easy to find a supplier that offers paper with a high amount of recycled material. The price shouldn't be too different, so shop around and see if you can make a difference to your profit margin whilst supporting the environment.

Environmentally friendly services and product suppliers may be found in your local area. Try to cut down on miles travelled. Energy is used up transporting your services and goods to you, and you'll be charged for this in your supplier's bill.

Be environmentally aware by re-vamping your old office furniture. It's less expensive than purchasing new equipment, and costs the environment less too.

Even small steps towards becoming environmentally friendly can have a noticeable impact on your bottom line! If an effort is made to limit consumption of paper, water and energy, it can make a huge difference on profit margins, and benefit the environment too. Take a minute to think about how much paper you could save your business in a year by only printing double-sided documents. One quick and easy 'green' change can have big rewards in more ways than one.
